Litany Against Fear

If you've spent any time with my patterns, you know that my work is generally smalls: squares, circles, repeating patterns that are quick to stitch and make for striking but simple ornaments and gifts. It is rare for me to make the foray into the world of samplers, but upon the request of a friend some months back, I designed Litany Against Fear.

The litany is from the science-fiction classic, Dune by author, Frank Herbert. I haven't read any of the Dune books, but a thorough search of the Internet gave me the inspiration I needed.  The stylized hawk's head is a common icon in Dune memorabilia.

The font is from one of my favorite stitching tools, 120 Alphabets by Carol Emmer.

This book has given me plenty of inspiration and ideas.  This is just one of many wonderful alphabet books at the Leisure Arts website.  One or two or three should give you all the lettering ideas you could possibly want.

Only 9 wedding invitations to go!

Stitch well, stitch happy!

  1. Your finish of Litany Against Fear is marvelous! Although I am a life-long fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy, I haven't read the Dune books either, although I have seen this saying excerpted several times. It is stark and simple, but very apt in some ways.

I really like that you left the sides open, as it visually represents the possibility of fear passing through an exit. The knotwork borders are beautiful, and the hawk medallions really embody the sort of uncomprimising focus that is conveyed by the words of the Litany. I'm sure that your friend will like it very much :)

Congratulations on working your way through stitching the wedding invitations! When you first said that you were stitching them, I envisioned that you were maybe doing one work in the wedding colours or something that would be the image on the invitations - I never imagined that you were stitching each and every one! I hope that your niece doesn't have a long guest list, lol, though I do think that your hand-stitched invitation will be a lovely keepsake :)

  3. I think the hawks head is actually part of the Atreides coat of arms. one of several houses of nobility in the Dune universe.

    1. The text font is not my creation, so I would be violating copyright laws were I to offer this to the general public.

Send me your email address. We'll figure something out. You can reach me at jeannedansby@att.net
